Crypto Unicorns DAO Announces Unicorn Party Shutdown

US developer Laguna Games and Crypto Unicorns DAO have announced in unison that they are going to shutdown the Unicorn Party. The Unicorn Party was a series of games covering the intellectual property of the Crypto Unicorns, with the goal of wider audience reach through simpler gameplay and reward systems.

Unicorn Party Reach and Sunsetted Titles

The titles that lived under the umbrella of the game of Unicorn Party included Bumpercorns, Mob Run, Unicorn Trivia, and real-money wagering features. These four titles have been sunset. The thinking behind these four games was to aim for mass appeal, easy-to-understand gaming, and engaging rewarding systems.

Future Focus and Challenges

The vision was to merge real-money gaming with web3 gaming and make Crypto Unicorns accessible to all types of gamers. However, the Web3 gaming landscape changes and evolves quickly, and the original plan no longer fits. During a governance council held on the 22nd day of July 2024, it was unanimously decided (11-0) to stop funding Unicorn Party.

Assets from Unicorn Party—specifically, Mob Run and Bumpercorns—will migrate to CU DAO for potential future development, with Laguna Games representing said assets.

According to the announcement, Team Surf will issue a full closure notice and advise against depositing new assets to the games.

Positive Developments for Crypto Unicorns

On the positive part, Crypto Unicorns has shown resurgence since migrating from Polygon for the Xai blockchain. This action seems to have rekindled the game and the community back to life to make it start afresh on a new network. With such momentum, the company announced that it plans to move a casual browser game like Rainbow Rumble in the style of Fall Guys to the Xai network in the near future.

This change in focus and the closing down of Unicorn Party show that Laguna Games is trying to double down on its core strengths and the areas of opportunity that exist within the large market for casual games. All other future developments, particularly around Rainbow Rumble migration, are awaited by the community and industry observers.
